before tomorrow's public service. the emotional goodbye from friends and strangers. >> reporter: julie, the official memorial is in san jose. for many who can't attend tomorrow, they paid their final respects tonight. more than 400 community members had a rare intimate chance to say their goodbye to the first santa cruz police officers ever killed in the line of duty. >> in my heart i knew i had to be here. how i felt. and that they are my heros. >> reporter: in a small room sat two flag draped caskets, carrying remains of elizabeth butler, and lauren baker. inside, person after person was left trying to figure out why. >> just walk out with such an overwhelming feeling of what a terrible waste of two great human buildings lives. >> the family members and

at san jose's hp pavilion will have a number of dignitaries in attendance, the motorcade will leave around 8:45 tomorrow morning. the trip is about 33 miles. the prosession is expected to travel about 30, to 40 miles per hour over highway 17. the chp says drivers will not be allowed to pass, and can expect delays. the mood was serious inside the hp pavilion today, as hundreds of people worked to prepare for tomorrow's memorial for those two police officers. a color guard practiced just above the ice this afternoon. they expect thousands of attend the private service. santa cruz deputy chief says the planning, and the preparation for the ceremony has also been therapeutic for the department. >> hopefully, for now we can find some peace and some rest in what we've done to honor these officers. >> friends of sergeant baker say he was a huge fan of the

sharks, and spent a lot of time at the shark tank. they say, they think he would be happy with the shark tanking about the site of the memorial. leon panetta, and pamela harris are expected to speak at the service. james durbin is scheduled to sing the song, with arms wide open by the group creed, and governor jerry brown is expected to attend, but will not be making any comments. you can watch tomorrow's morallial here on ktvu. our coverage of the memorial begins at 11:00, with the service starting at noon. tonight, we now know the identity of a female volunteer who was mauled to death by a lion at a private animal park in fresno. the incident happened this afternoon at cat haven in dunlap in the sierra foothills.

the victim was 24-year-old diana hanson from washington state. she was working as an intern at the animal sanctuary. fresno county deputies say the victim was found inside the lion's enclosure. investigators are trying to determine why the intern was inside the cage with the lion, and what might have provoked the attack. this afternoon, the founder of the facility cried as he issued a statement. >> our thoughts and prayers go out to our friend and family, and to her family at this time, in this trying time. >> the 4-year-old male lion named couscous was shot and killed by deputies following the attack. officials say the lion had been raised at cat haven since he was a cub. as you can see from this video, he even appeared on the ellen degeneres show back in 2010.

hundreds of people attended an emotional memorial in martinez to show their support for a missing 18-year-old. amber lee attended that vigil, and tells us why some think bullying may be involved here. >> reporter: frank, ryan mendovar is 3 months from graduating from high school. friends and family members say he was bullied, and think that may have led to his disappearance. they're hoping these flyers will help bring him home. more than 300 people packed into creek side church and filled an overfilled room. before he disappeared, ryan left a note for his parents. >> he said he was being bullied, and just that, he was pretty much done with everything. >> ryan, come home. all of these people are here.

>> reporter: friend nick jessop told me he was ryan's protecter at school, until he went off to college last year. >> he had to eat lunch in the bathroom. he was just miserable. he came out as a bisexual. he's never done anything like this before. >> reporter: spring is a time for rebirth. and for ryan's family, hope springs eternal. the flyer shows a man in his cap and gown, anticipating graduation. his parents tell me he left with only the clothes on his back, and his cell phone. but it was found nearby. >> this is so out of character for my son to do something like this. so i worry, his state of mind right now, i don't know what he's going through. >> reporter: other teens at tonight's vigil tell me they too were bullied. >> the schools don't have much power as to helping you get them in trouble for bullying

you. >> >> reporter: family and friends say, if only ryan can see the large turnout at this vigil, and he will know he is loved, and he has support. amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. walnut creek police asked for the public's help in locating a bank robber. this is surveillance photo from the chase bank in the palace verdes mall. police say it was robbed about 2:20 this afternoon. the man is described about 30 years old. 5'10", with a medium build, a goatee, and a mustache. police say no weapon was seen during the robbery. on wall street, the dow industrials continued to climb, closing an another all-time high today. the dow rose 42 points, and finished the day at 14,296. today's gains were driven by a positive job's report. adp says companies added 198,000 workers in february. job gains in january were higher than first reported.

the labor department is expected to issue its monthly jobs report on friday. in the sierra tonight, they've gotten between 12 and 20 inches of new snow from this latest winter storm. ken pritchett reports with the conditions on the slope and for people trying to get there. at one point you faced rain and ice. miles later, it was snow. at times, blue skies were overhead. dropping flurries on the road ahead. >> classic spring storm. a classic march form. >> reporter: he says what makes it a classic storm is how it snows, and stops, and snows again. the chains move with it. >> they just moved it down. back down around 3,000 feet again. >> reporter: we were about a mile past the chain controls,

this was the scene at an apartment complex near john muir parkway. two cars were damaged, but luckily, no one was injured. >> now let's go to ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin on how much rain this delivered. >> we had the wind and the rain. the wind was heaviest last night. you can see, really not a lot of activity, it's really died down. a little bit of spottiness. that is it. as far as rail, most of it fell last night. here are the numbers. heaviest rain in the coastal hills. some areas got over an inch of rain. check out santa rosa, over .4 of an inch of rain. heaviest rain was here in boulder creek. how does that work out for percents of average? it's going to pop up on the right. look at santa rosa. under 80% of average now. san francisco, 78. san jose under 70% at 68%.

in san jose, a man was killed today. it's the city's seventh homicide so far this year. the body was found in one of san jose's most expensive neighborhood. >> reporter: this is a popular park among hikers and locals. police left about 45 minutes ago, locking that gate behind them. there's still a lot of questions, including motive, suspects, and witnesses. a street lined with expensive homes, is also lined with police cars, and crime scene tape. tonight, neighbors in one of san jose's priciest neighborhoods are shaking their heads at what they once thought was unthinkable. >> there's a murdered person. a murdered young man in there. >> reporter: someone called 911 just before 4:00. inside, a single homicide victim in his early 20s. police say he appears to have been stabbed with a knife. >> sometimes a stabbing is

indicative of a crime that's very personal, or a crime of passion. at this point, we just don't know. >> reporter: tonight, police held a car at the park, while vectors used flashlights into the evening. >> the whole neighborhood is very peaceful and calm, and everyone knows everyone. this is weird. >> reporter: jesse jimenez told us her neighbor was in the park when the body was found. >> she was walking her dogs in the park. heard screaming. >> reporter: teresa was getting ready to go for a hike when police descended on her neighborhood. >> it's crime, more and more in our neighborhood. all over san jose. >> reporter: in january, a brazen home invasion robbery targeted an elderly couple on brent hart drive. the suspect stole the couple's electronics, jewelry, and car. >> this could be the wild west out here. i tell you, people are getting guns, and we're arming ourselves, because the city hasn't given us a choice.

>> reporter: police aren't releasing the victim's name. they don't know what his connection is to this park right now. they want to know what he was doing here. and if he might have been here earlier in the day with a group that frequents this park. reporting live in san jose, noel walker, ktvu, channel 2 news. investigators say marijuana grow houses were involved in two incidents in san francisco this morning. a house fire, and a hostage standoff. after six hours, s.w.a.t. teams arrested a man, suspected of holding four people hostage in the grow house at the bay view district. police say four masked men broke into the facility on jennings street, shortly before 4:00 a.m. this morning. four of the robbers were arrested, as they ran from the house. in the sunset district, firefighters say they found marijuana all around a house on 8th avenue after responding to a fire there. one firefighter injured his shoulder when he fell down some stairs. we obtained exclusive pictures of the marijuana plants. the fire may have been started

by illegal wiring. the homes on either side of the house were also damaged. facebook has a new face on its board of directors tonight. dr.susan hellman is currently the chancellor of uc san francisco. before that, she was the president of product development. she will be the second woman on facebook's board of directors. tomorrow, facebook isexpected to unveil a whole new look for the news read pages. some say it may involve looks for mobile readers, and increasing the size of articles that appear on the news feed. new developments in the case of a multimillion dollar yacht that ran aground in

pacifica this week. eric rasmussen spoke with a couple just released from jail, and got their take on what happened. >> what's a $2.2 million yacht like? >> it beats gilligan. >> 54-year-old dario says it was quite a ride. he insists he did not know this yacht was stolen, even after they got stuck in shallow water in pacifica on monday. police arrested mera, his girlfriend, and leslie gardner of wyoming. mera says gardner claimed it belonged to someone he knew. >> he had a key. that's why it seemed so legitimate. >> reporter: today, gardner on crutches appeared in court to face charges. prosecutors believe he is the only one responsible for stealing the yacht. they say his two passengers

a san francisco bicyclist accused of felony vehicular manslaughter listened quietly today, as witnesses testified, he was biking very fast when he fatally injured a 71-year-old woman. witnesses say he ran a red

light before he hit suchi wi. the woman died days later. testimony on the client's speed is unreliable, and they claim pedestrians ignored a don't walk sign. the testimony came in a preliminary hearing to determine if he will stand trial. a convicted sex offender is scheduled to be released into a contra costa neighborhood in the next few days, despite the objections of people in that neighborhood. some are trying to stop the move and why one man supports it. >> reporter: deputies knocking on doors, handing out flyers. >> he's been classified as a sex offender. >> reporter: charles slaton is scheduled to move to town. >> i don't want my daughters to be threatened at all, in any way. >> i don't want him here.

with this avenue. >> reporter: we should know more about that emergency stay possibly as early as tomorrow. the number of paroled sex offenders who have dropped out of site since prison alignment has increased 13%. the data shows about 180 paroled sex offenders disappeared each month since the new law took effect in 2011. that's chaired to 156 a month before realignment. the realignment law sends lower level offends to county jails instead of state prisons. critics suggest sex offenders become more bold. yahoo's ceo marissa myer is getting a hefty bonus. yahoo is reporting a $1.1 million bonus for her first five months of work, that's on top of her salary plus stock

compensation. this comes one week after myer made headlines by ordering an end to worker's telecommuting. another company is reportedly following suit. best buy is cutting back on telecommuting at its corporate headquarters. the company has been struggling to compete with online rivals. they will require corporate workers to report to their offices unless they obtain a supervisor's permission. media giant time warner announced plans to spinoff its magazines. the split is expected to happen by the end of the year. some analysts consider the magazine business a real drag on time warner profits. president obama breaks bread with republicans tonight. what they discuss, and who picked up the tab.

the san francisco district attorney plans to file charges against a man expected of killing while driving drunk. brewer is scheduled to be arraigned on friday, and faces the possibility of ten years in prison if convicted. new york police say the prime suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a young pregnant woman, her husband, and later their baby is now under arrest. police say 44-year-old julio acevedo turned himself in today. he was also facing drunk driving charges at the time of the crash. it was just after midnight on

sunday when police say he crashed his bmw into the vehicle that was carrying newlyweds to the hospital. the couple died hours later, but their premature baby was born by c section and unfortunately died the next day. the man being counted on to turn around oakland's escalating crime rate made his first public appearance this afternoon. oakland is paying for william bratton to make the city safer. ken wayne is live with what bratton plans to do. >> reporter: we should know within a few weeks whether or not this new crime fighting strategy is going to work. for some oakland residents, it's already too late. he was robbed at gunpoint last week. >> how much money? >> about 200, and credit cards, everything. >> reporter: enter the man expected to turn things around.

gop senators. senators said they had candid questions. next week, he plans to meet with more senate republicans, as well as house republicans. earlier, the house passed a bill to keep the government running through september. the legislation now goes to the democrat controlled senate, where a lengthy debate is expected. without it, the government could shut down at the end of the month. the federal aviation administration says the control towers at five small bay area airports are on a list for closure. the faa plans to announce the final list on march 18. then the towers would be closed in early april. three bay area mayors who were once divided over the location of the 49ers new stadium, they all came together today. the mayors all appear at the construction site of the team's

a helicopterhoisted him to safety. his injuries are said to be nonlife-threatening. two amazing discoveries at the sacramento airport. a flight atentant on a southwest plane discovered a bullet hole in the cabin. >> the captain, just as a precautionary measure wanted the flight checked, because the flight attendant found a .22 caliber cartridge. >> nothing else was found onboard. in an unrelated incident, at the sacramento airport today, tsa agents discovered a loaded gun in a carry-on bag. the man had a concealed carry permit and forgot the gun was in the bag. he was not arrested.

gabrielle giffords made a return to the spot where she was shot as a leading voice on gun reform. >> reporter: she is going back to the grocery store parking lot when she was shot two years ago. it's giffords first public event at the safeway where the shooting took place. asking congress to pass universal background checks for gun purchases. >> be bold, be courageous. please support background checks. >> reporter: gabrielle giffords was one of 13 people injured when a gunman opened fire in 2011. six others died. kelly, her husband, and a former astronaut says that day would have been very different if proposed changes were in
